2017.7.5 - Work Hard, Play Hard

 The day started off with a short review lesson in English class, followed by about and hour and a half of moving some sacks of chopped hair to bed the trees in our greenhouse. It was hard work in humid weather, but it definitely got the heart pumping and had me feeling good.
 After a quick stop back at camp to shower and change clothes, we went to the farmers market, where two members and I built a grill.
 We used the grill we built to have a cookout in honor of celebrating our members' hard work. An appreciation cookout is always welcome. ^_^
Near the end of the cookout, the girls decided to go for a midnight swim in the ocean. Chilly but nice!
As a final farewell to our departing member Soohyun (left), Soo-in and I joined her for a final dance at the Monkey Beach nightclub. Not many people (it was 1AM on a Wednesday) but certainly memorable! It's all about friends - family, really - here at our camp. A great day indeed!

How to Make: Pickled Korean Radish with Red Cabbage

Pickling Radishes and Red Cabbages Pickled vegetables are one of the most common side dishes in Korean cuisine. They are easy to make and can feed a lot of people - they also pair well with just about any main dish (especially Korean BBQ and other grilled meat)!!! Let's take a look at how to make some pickled Korean vegetables! First up: Get some Korean or daikon radishes and red cabbage (much sweeter than white cabbage). You will also need vinegar (about one or two bottles, depending on how much you want to make), and some white sugar. However, you can change up the recipe if you like! Try apple cider vinegar to use less sugar, or use a soft beverage like a lemon-lime soda in place of the sugar. (More on that later!)  One of the most vital aspects of understanding another country and its people is to know that country's history. Visiting these significant locations helps to better understand the culture of the place where you are staying, and thus I give my strong recommendation to pay a visit.  In Jeju, one of the most important historical sites is Seotal Oreums, though it is commonly just referred to as Sa-Sam (43). This site was heavily used by Japanese soldiers during the occupation period in Korean history.  Plane bunkers were dug out by Korean locals - under Japanese command - to house planes during WWII.  From above, US planes could not distinguish the bunkers from other hills and mounds of the mountainous landscape of Jeju.
